This is a striking, Japanese Okimono (decorative display sculpture) depicting a samurai warrior in full battle armor atop a spirited charger horse. Produced by the renowned Toyo Trading Company during the mid century this heavy figurine (12 lbs) captures the dramatic energy of feudal Japan. The design is heavily inspired by Japan's iconic public monument of the legendary 14th-century samurai Kusunoki Masashige, located outside the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.

Design & Modular Construction:
• Interlocking Two-Piece Concept: A hallmark of Toyo's classic craftsmanship, the statue is cast in two separate pieces. The samurai warrior features an integrated seat that mounts cleanly over the horse's saddle, locking securely into place.

•Functional Detailing: The horse features a hollow body with an open saddle slot and a small ventilation hole near the rear flank. This design was traditionally utilized by Toyo to serve a dual purpose, often housing a vintage tabletop lighter mechanism or acting as a traditional Koro (incense burner), allowing smoke to elegantly drift from the horse.

•Dynamic Iconography: The horse is sculpted in a powerful, rearing stance with a fluidly windswept mane and tail. The warrior leans into the charge, clad in elaborate Yoroi (Japanese plate armor) and a traditional Kabuto (helmet) featuring prominent Kuwagata (horn) crests.

Composition & Finish:
• Material: Heavy, solid cast metal alloy (characteristic of vintage antimonial lead or spelter), giving the piece a substantial, premium weight and an authentic, antique feel.

• Color Palette: Features a sophisticated two-tone finish. The main bodies of the horse and rider are finished in an aged, antiqued silver/pewter wash, highlighted by hand-painted gold-gilt accents on the armor plates (sode), helmet crest, saddle trim, and harness tack.

• Base: The entire sculpture is anchored to an integrated, textured cast-metal rectangular plinth.

  • Authentic Markings: Original Toyo Japan Sticker on the base.
  • Subject: Samurai Equestrian/Cavalry
    Warriors
  • Material: Heavy cast metal with pewter gold-toned
  • Dimensions: Approximately 14”L x 13”H x 4”W
