A beautiful set of three (3) matching antique Arita ware plates, featuring hand-painted blue and white designs. The design on these specific plates depicts a traditional Japanese landscape with buildings, trees, and mountains.
Description
- Origin: Arita ware (Arita-yaki) originates from the Hizen Province (modern-day Saga
Prefecture) in Japan and has been renowned since the Edo period (1603-1868). - Design: The plates showcase a detailed
"sometsuke" style, which refers to the blue underglaze decoration. The scene is painted in cobalt blue and features a pastoral or scholar's retreat motif by a river or cascading tree. - Material: It is made of pottery or porcelain
- Markings: The underside of each plate is decorated with three hand-painted "shop marks" or auspicious symbols, often associated with the 19th-century porcelain.
- Period: Similar antique plates of this style can date from the Edo to the Meiji period (circa
1850-1880).
Condition Report:
• General: The plates are in good antique condition with a vibrant glaze.
• Specific Wear: One plate has a visible hairline crack/line in the porcelain, as shown in the close-up photo. This appears to be a stable age-related line and does not compromise the structural integrity for display.
• Character: Minor "kiln grit" (small dark specks from the firing process) and irregularities in the glaze are present, which are expected and desired in authentic hand-made pieces of this era.
